It was noted at the AGM that there have been several unwanted saplings shooting up in various parts of Altamira which Paddy Faircloth, our tree surgeon, will deal with shortly. He is responsible for the common parts of Altamira, but those saplings that grow in owners’ gardens are the owners’ responsibility. Paddy has given us instructions to pass on to owners on how to deal with them before the trees become too big and cause problems.
To remove saplings it is always best to try and dig them out at first. When digging them out try to remove as much of the root as possible. If the root is too big and you can’t dig the sapling out, cut the woody stem as close to ground level as possible. To stop the tree from growing back you can apply a glyphosate based herbicide such as SBK or Roundup to the stump, available from a garden centre, and follow instructions.Or if you don’t want to use a herbicide, as the stump reshoots keep cutting the new shoots down to starve the roots of food and eventually kill the tree.
If there are any difficulties with this, and an owner would like the sapling to be removed by Paddy, please contact Mark Gobby of Blenheims who will arrange for Paddy to do the work and charge back the cost with the next service charge invoice.
