Wildflower Meadow:  We have prepared a corner of the Green to establish a wildflower meadow.  There is already a small copse of hawthorn trees and the plan is that that corner will be a wildflower meadow.  The grass was prepared last winter and yellow rattle seeds planted in order to suppress the growth of grass, which inhibits the growth of wild flowers, together with an assortment of wild flower seeds.  So far nothing has happened!   We haven’t lost hope since we are told that it takes a couple of years or more for the wild flowers to establish themselves.

Walls:  There is an ongoing project to repair the small garden walls around Altamira, which are the landlord’s responsibility.  This is done as and when funds are available and according to the state of individual walls.

Work is also being done to repair a retaining wall behind Block A.

Website:  This is a very longstanding project in hand, but has had to wait until time and funds permit.  We hope that it will form a focus for everyone living at Altamira and encourage participation.  Apart from the news and information features already posted, we would welcome your photographs to add to the Gallery featuring a nice corner of Altamira: “beautiful corner” may be a little optimistic!   Please submit .jpeg images via the Contact Us email address.

We’d love to have any further ideas to expand and enhance the website.

Recent Projects

Garages:

There are 34 garages at Altamira, split between three blocks.  Ownership is varied: many are owned by owner residents or owner landlords.  Some are still owned by the previous freeholders, Grainger plc, who let them out to Altamira residents/owners.  However, there are plans for Grainger to sell their garages to flat owners in the foreseeable future.  (NB: Only people who own properties at Altamira may purchase garages.)

The garages have recently undergone a facelift and been repaired and renovated, with the brittle asbestos roofs replaced with more durable steel ones.  Some of the interior timber work was in a very bad state of repair, together with large sections of the concrete: all this was replaced (see accompanying images).  Finally the garage blocks all received a new coat of paint.

It should be pointed out that responsibility for maintenance of the fabric of the garages falls on the individual owner.   This is in contrast to the situation with the flats, which it is the responsibility of the freehold company to maintain.

Future Projects

Car Parking areas:  Resurfacing of the car parking areas and the garage blocks is a major project that will require attention in the foreseeable future.
